The Portuguese gaming authority, SRIJ, has implemented a fresh directive forbidding the dissemination of live sports betting probabilities online or in physical locations.
This new regulation, designated as 2022/SRIJ/1, took effect on March 18th, mandating operators to abstain from publishing live odds for games on any platform, encompassing LED displays within stadiums and arenas.
SRIJ stresses that any instance of live updated odds will be deemed illicit advertising, and operators may encounter regulatory consequences.
The introduction of this new rule follows a proposal approved unanimously by the Portuguese legislative body last October, aiming to restrict gambling advertising.
Portugal’s decision to prohibit live odds aligns with similar regulations in other European nations, including the Netherlands, where laws forbid advertising during sporting events to prevent impulsive wagering by participants.
Last month, the Dutch gambling regulator, Kansspelautoriteit, issued a caution to a licensed operator for advertising on the social media platform Twitter during a football match.
The unidentified operator posted match updates on Twitter, referencing odds in certain posts and including direct links to their website where consumers could place bets on the game.
