Digital gaming earnings in Portugal achieved a new peak in the second trimester, reaching €205.9 million.

This figure displays a notable rise compared to the €145.2 million recorded in the same period of 2022, and a 4.9% increase compared to the previous high of €1.964 billion in the initial trimester of this year.

Virtual casino games constituted the largest portion of earnings in the quarter, reaching €122 million, a 51.6% rise from the previous year. This is a new high for the sector, according to data from the regulatory body, the Gambling Regulation and Inspection Service (SRIJ).

Gamblers spent €32.4 billion on internet casino games in the first trimester, another new peak for Portugal. Slot machines accounted for 82.5% of all online casino spending, followed by French roulette at 7.6% and twenty-one at 5.4%.

Sports wagering revenue also witnessed growth, reaching €84 million, a 29.8% increase from 2022, but slightly lower than the initial trimester of this year.

Consumers spent €357.6 million on sports betting in the quarter. This represents a 17.1% increase from the same period last year, but a 19.0% decrease from the second trimester. This is the second consecutive quarter of decline in Portugal.

Soccer accounted for 68.4% of all sports wagering in the second trimester. Around 20.1% of bets were placed on tennis, 7.4% on basketball, and 4.1% on other sports.

The number of individuals in Portugal who have voluntarily excluded themselves from online gambling has surpassed 181,600.

The Portuguese regulatory body, SRIJ, has unveiled figures concerning player self-exclusion from online gaming. By the conclusion of the second trimester, roughly 181,600 individuals had barred themselves from wagering on Portuguese-licensed websites.

During the second trimester, 33,800 individuals opted to self-exclude.

Regarding new account registrations with authorized operators, the second trimester witnessed 190,200. This implies that by the end of the quarter, approximately 3.8 million individuals maintained online gambling accounts with SRIJ-approved websites.

Revenue from land-based gambling also experienced an upswing in the second trimester.

Shifting focus to the land-based sector, second-quarter revenue reached €66.8 million, representing a 6.8% year-over-year increase.

Of this sum, €49.6 million originated from physical slot machines, marking a 1.8% year-over-year rise. An additional €17.2 million stemmed from casino-style and bingo games, reflecting a 24.4% year-over-year surge.

American roulette generated €6.1 million in revenue during the quarter, baccarat’s share amounted to €5.1 million, and blackjack contributed €6.1 million.
