The Electronic Sports Entertainment Group (EEG) has once again named Damian Matthews as the head of operations.
Matthews previously served as EEG’s financial director and held the position of chief operating officer for a short period between April and December of last year.
He stepped down from both roles in December but remained on EEG’s board of directors, a position he has held since June 2020.
Before joining EEG, Matthews was the head of operations for Auckland Property Group and held the position of financial director at the sovereign wealth funds Qatar Investment Authority and Abu Dhabi Investment Authority.
Matthews also served as a director of New Zealand Pacific Investments, treasurer of ASB Bank, director of product control at ABN Amro Bank, and finance director at Royal Bank of Scotland.
Furthermore, Matthews held several senior positions at Commonwealth Bank and Credit Suisse.
“Damian previously served as financial director, starting in April 2022, and was appointed chief operating officer in June 2022 until he stepped down in December,” said Alex Eagleman, who was appointed EEG CEO in January.
“Despite his departure, he remains a valuable member of the board, where he believes he can have the biggest impact.”
Throughout his short yet influential time as Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer, he played a crucial role in simplifying company procedures and pushing forward significant alterations within the organization.
“Crucially, his decision to return to the team shows his complete agreement with the company’s new path and the promising future of the esports industry.”
Significant change
Matthews added: “Since my departure as CFO/COO in December, and in my ongoing position as a board member, I have personally observed the remarkable transformations that Alex has spearheaded in just a few short months.
“I am certain in the company’s new leadership and direction and am eager to play a vital part in driving the financial and operational success of the company.
“The esports and online gaming industry is experiencing rapid expansion, and I firmly believe that EEG now possesses the correct resources, at the perfect moment, with the right leadership and business plan, to become a dominant force in this expanding market.”
