The recent backing of the New York Jets by 888 has caused quite a stir.
This deal is notable due to the National Football League’s (NFL) existing prohibition on promotions for sports wagering services. Despite the lack of a formal declaration from the Jets, 888 has teamed up with the team. Interestingly, 888 openly proclaims itself as the “Official Partner of the New York Jets” on its website.
This collaboration was impossible to overlook for any Jets supporter at MetLife Stadium recently. Vivid orange signage prominently displayed 888.com throughout the venue. While the signage avoided any mention of 888’s sports wagering operations, which would violate NFL regulations, 888.com’s main webpage prominently features a football player and a direct connection to – as one might anticipate – their sports betting platform.
The NFL’s guidelines, intended to limit the increase in gambling issues, particularly among younger demographics, explicitly forbid advertising from any sports betting sites. It appears 888 and the Jets may have discovered a workaround, one that the NFL may need to examine going forward. It is worth noting that the NFL did remove its ban on casino advertising this season.
Currently, the Jets, the NFL, and 888 have all chosen not to provide statements regarding the sponsorship.
