Allwyn, the organization poised to assume control of the UK National Lottery, has concluded its purchase of Camelot Lottery Solutions (LS) Group. Formerly held by the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board, Camelot LS will now fall under the Allwyn umbrella.
Significantly, Allwyn has stated that the existing management at Camelot LS will stay put. The goal is to incorporate them into Allwyn’s UK lottery activities once the formal license handover is finalized.
This acquisition represents a pivotal moment in the protracted saga concerning the lottery license transition. Camelot, having been unsuccessful in its bid for the fourth National Lottery license, had previously initiated legal actions to maintain control.
The shift to Allwyn marks the conclusion of an epoch. Since its commencement in 1994, the UK National Lottery has been inseparable from Camelot, the exclusive operator throughout three successive licenses.
Allwyn’s triumph in obtaining the fourth license in 2022 prompted immediate resistance. Camelot challenged the Gambling Commission’s ruling in British courts, instigating legal disputes that ultimately wrapped up late last year.
Nevertheless, the narrative doesn’t cease there. IGT, Camelot’s technological associate, has declined to acknowledge defeat. In January 2023, they lodged a legal claim against the Gambling Commission, asserting that granting the license to the Czech-owned Allwyn group harmed their “standing in the market.”
The unexpected announcement of Allwyn’s proposal to acquire Camelot, the UK National Lottery’s administrator, stunned the sector. This unforeseen action follows Camelot’s unsuccessful attempt to maintain its hold on the lottery concession, which was granted to Allwyn.
Robert Chvátal, Allwyn’s chief executive, stressed that purchasing Camelot would guarantee a smooth handover from the existing lottery management to the new one under Allwyn’s direction. He emphasized the advantages of combining the knowledge and proficiency of two lottery titans.
